GOOD FRIDAY morning was bright and sunny as they came down to breakfast. On entering the kitchen, Izzy turned to face them, face straight, her hands on her hips.

“God, you two are loud!” They stared at her with mortified expressions, until she could no longer keep her face straight and burst out laughing. Both men blushed. Izzy leaned over to kiss first Michael, then Sean on the cheek, and whispered in Sean’s ear, “Well, after what I heard last night, I’m thinking that I’ve definitely got a brother-in-law at last—from an unexpected source, granted!” Sean stared at her, amazed at the comment. Izzy smiled. “Take care of him,” she whispered again. Sean nodded, suddenly grabbing Izzy in a fierce hug, tears pricking the corners of his eyes. He’d always wanted a sister, and now it looked like he’d suddenly inherited two at once. Michael could not stop smiling as he watched this tender scene.

“Morning, you two!” Mary entered the kitchen, beaming at them. “What are your plans for today?”

“I thought I might take Sean to visit Dad’s grave—I was going to take some flowers anyway.” Michael looked at Sean with a hint of apprehension. “Would you come with me?”

Sean was touched. He nodded silently and noticed a look of approval on Mary’s face. As he reached for some cereal, he noticed Michael conversing quietly with his mother, obviously trying not to be overheard. “What are you up to, Mitchell?” Michael flushed guiltily. Ah-ha! Definitely up to something. “Well?”

Michael looked toward his mother, who nodded, smiling. “I was asking Mum to do me a favor while we were out. It’s meant to be a surprise, but….”

“I hate surprises!” said Sean. Michael sighed.

“Okay, then, Mum was going to book us a table at my favorite Italian restaurant for tomorrow night.” On seeing Sean’s blank look, he continued. “Just the two of us… you know, a date?”

Sean’s face morphed into such a loving expression that Michael’s heart felt fit to bursting.

“Love, that’s a beautiful idea. I’d really, really like that.” Sean walked across to Michael and kissed him on the mouth, the kiss deepening as his tongue gently probed Michael’s lips for a second or two. Then he broke away, suddenly realizing that they had an audience. He slowly backed away, embarrassed, but Michael grabbed hold of him around the waist and pulled him close, kissing him again. The two ceased their kissing to see Mary and Izzy both staring at them, mouths slightly open. There was a moment of silence.

“Oh my God, that was so sweet!” Izzy suddenly wiped tears from her eyes. “I never knew two men could kiss like that. It was just so… so full of love.”

Mary hugged her daughter to her. “That’s how any couple kiss when they are in love, darling,” she said, still gazing at the two of them with so much love that Sean blushed. Inside, he was reeling from what he had just heard. Sean had never expected to find such total acceptance from
